Biography

Susan Forscher Weiss is Chair of Musicology at the Peabody Institute and Professor in the Department of German and Romance Languages at the Johns Hopkins University. Her publications include Heinrich Glarean's Books. The Intellectual World of a Musical Humanist (2013), Bologna Q 18, Civico museo bibliografico musicale (olim 143: an Introduction and Facsimile (1998), and Music Education in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (2010) and is currently co-editing A Cole Porter Companion. She is the recipient of numerous awards, the most recent a National Endowment for the Humanities Digital Start-Up Grant on musical prosopography of Renaissance musicians.

Project Summary

The project involves an ongoing study of the iconography associated with memory and learning in medieval and Renaissance musical sources. Specific attention will focus on the influence of Andalusian and Arabic musical theory on European music of the fifteenth century, particularly on treatises published in Italy and on writers in and around Bologna.
