I Tatti's 2018 fall concert featured the Ensemble Clément Janequin with a program titled “Enemies of State: Music at the Courts of Francis I and Charles V.”

Pedro Memelsdorff (VIT'04) introduced the sixteenth-century compositions, calling particular attention to the theatricality of the pieces by Mateo Flecha (1481-1553) and Janequin himself (1485-1558), whose songs narrate battles, shipwrecks, and hunts with onomatopoeic yet melodic passages describing gunfire, fanfare, birdsong, drunken satyrs, and the baying of the hounds. The charismatic performances by Dominique Visse (countertenor), Hugues Primard (tenor), Vincent Bouchot (baritone), Marc Busnel (bass), and Eric Bellocq (lute) combined dramatic effect and technical difficulty.
