Biography
Eric Gordon is Head of Painting Conservation at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, where he has worked since 1985. He graduated from NYU with an MA in art history and art conservation. Previously he worked at the Intermuseum Conservation Laboratory in Oberlin, Ohio, The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the Williamstown Art Conservation Laboratory in Massachusetts. In 1997 he won the Rome Prize. Eric has authored many articles and given numerous presentations on subjects ranging from Sienese Renaissance painting techniques to early Chinese wall paintings, to the re-emergence of a large canvas by Giambattista Tiepolo to the rediscovery of a lost George Inness masterpiece.
Project Summary
The View of an Ideal City by an unknown artist (c. 1480) is a cornerstone of Italian Renaissance art yet its origins and purpose remain a mystery. This project aims to bring together scientific and technical research obtained through the years, to help make an attribution and place the painting in a clearer context.
