Biography

Christia Mercer is Gustave M. Berne Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, general editor of Oxford Philosophical Concepts, and co-editor of Oxford New Histories of Philosophy. Her major works include Leibniz's Metaphysics: Its Origins and Development and Exploring the Philosophy of Anne Conway. Her recent awards include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship, and the Folger Library.

Project Summary

This project argues that historians of philosophy need to rethink core assumptions about seventeenth-century philosophy and that the writings of medieval and early modern women play a much more significant part in that history than has been recognized.
