Biography

Giancarlo Casale holds a PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University and is currently associate professor in the history of the Islamic World at the University of Minnesota, where he has taught since 2005. He also serves as the executive editor of theJournal of Early Modern History. His primary area of research is the early modern Ottoman Empire and the history of its interactions with the world around it. His first book, The Ottoman Age of Exploration, was published in 2010.



Project Summary

The aim of this project is to bring together the intellectual worlds of the Latin West and the Ottoman East by exploring the ways in which both sides—albeit in very different ways—employed the philological techniques and rhetorical tools of Renaissance humanism.
