Speaker: Timothy Brook (I Tatti / University of British Columbia)
Rather than present the findings of my research in the form of an academic paper, I propose to do a reading of the first section of the book I am writing here at I Tatti about the vast library of the eminent London lawyer, John Selden (1584-1654). My intention in so doing is to seek criticism and advice about how best to present the history of a library to a popular rather than scholarly reading audience, which is the intended audience of the book, and of course to receive correction when and where I get things wrong, as I no doubt shall.
Timothy Brook is professor emeritus of Chinese history at the University of British Columbia. His more popular books include Vermeer's Hat (2008), Mr. Selden's Map of China (2013), Great State: China and the World (2019-2020), and The Price of Collapse: The Little Ice Age and the Fall of Ming China (2023)
