The I Tatti community is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Paolo Galluzzi on October 29, 2026. An internationally renowned historian of science and longtime Director of Florence’s Museo Galileo, Professor Galluzzi was an esteemed colleague and friend to many at I Tatti. Over the years, he maintained a close and enduring relationship with the Harvard Center in Florence, contributing both to its governance as a member of I Tatti’s Executive Committee and to its scholarly life in numerous ways. In 2014, he was invited to deliver the prestigious Bernard Berenson Lectures on the Italian Renaissance, a series of three lectures entitled “Machinae pictae”: Idea e immagini delle macchine nel Rinascimento. These subsequently formed the basis of his book The Italian Renaissance of Machines, published by Harvard University Press in 2020 as part of the Bernard Berenson Lectures series. Professor Galluzzi also delivered Thursday Seminars at I Tatti on several occasions.
I Tatti remembers Professor Galluzzi with great affection and gratitude for his scholarship, intellectual generosity, and many years of friendship. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
