Biography

Eugenio Refini (PhD, Scuola Normale Superiore, 2010) works primarily on medieval and early modern literary culture in Italy and France. His publications cover topics such as Renaissance drama, vernacular and Latin humanism, the classical tradition, the works of Ludovico Ariosto, Torquato Tasso, Giovan Battista Della Porta. He is the author of a monograph on Alessandro Piccolomini (Per via d’annotationi: le glosse inedite di Alessandro Piccolomini all’Ars Poetica di Orazio, Lucca 2009). He has been visiting scholar at the University of Geneva (2005-2006), the ENS-Paris (2008), the Harry Ransom Center (2011) and AHRC-research fellow at the University of Warwick (2010-2013).

Project Summary

The project focuses on the vernacular reception of Leonardo Bruni’s Latin translation of Aristotle’s Ethics (1416) in 15th-century Florence. By addressing and contextualizing Bernardo Nuti’s vernacular translation of Bruni’s text (c.1450), this project will provide a new understanding of other 15th-century interpretations and compare them with contemporary works in Venice.
