Valentina Lepri
Precepts for the political adviser: Machiavelli and Guicciardini as aphorists
2012-2013
Biography
Valentina Lepri received her Ph.D. in Civilisation of Humanism and the Renaissance from the Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento, Florence, where she has been a collaborator for many years. She was post-doctoral reseach fellow at the Herzog August Bibliothek of Wolfenbüttel and thanks to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs she was recently a research fellow at the Instytut Badań Interdyscyplinarnych “Artes Liberales” of Warsaw University. Her research is focused on philosophical and political issues of the Modern Age, with special reference to late sixteenth-century collections of maxims and Italian thinkers such as Giordano Bruno, Francesco Guicciardini and Niccolò Machiavelli.
Project Summary
She aims to explore the late sixteenth-century phenomenon of the publication of precepts produced by extrapolating maxims from the works of Niccolò Machiavelli and Francesco Guicciardini. These collections gave rise to a series of texts that has never been appraised as a whole, despite the fact that all these editions shared a focus on the subject of the political counselor.
