Biography

Rafael Girón completed his PhD at the University of Granada in 2012. His dissertation studied the Genoese merchants in the Kingdom of Granada in the early modern age, and brought him to the Archivio di Stato di Genova and Paris (EHESS) to conduct research. The focus of his thesis was the relationship between families and trading companies and their interaction with elites and local powers. In 2013-2014, he was a visiting post-doctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge.

Project Summary

This project will analyze the commercial networks of Castilian and Genoese merchants in the wool, dyes and cloths trade in Florence in the early modern period. Political, social and economic aspects will be critically important for this study, particularly an analysis of merchant social mobility strategies.
