I Tatti artists in residence, Brigitte Shim and A. Howard Sutcliffe will share their commitment and passion for craft, tectonics, site and ecology in their built projects. Their multi-scalar approach to design engages architecture, landscape architecture, interiors, furniture, hardware, and fittings helping to shape meaningful spaces and places. They will present a series of critical issues and probing questions that have defined their architectural practice. For Shim and Sutcliffe, I Tatti is a dynamic international institution that is always pushing the boundaries. During their seminar, they will also share their observations and insights along with furniture designs inspired by their time at I Tatti.
Brigitte Shim and A. Howard Sutcliffe are collaborators in work and in life. Their Toronto based architectural practice Shim-Sutcliffe have realized public and private projects including several sacred spaces situated in North America, Asia and Europe. To date, Shim-Sutcliffe have received sixteen Governor General’s Medals and Awards for Architecture from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. In 2021, the duo were awarded the Gold Medal from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, their country’s highest honor in recognition of their relentless pursuit of design excellence. Their work is recognized for its poetic quality and its dedication to material expression and they have made a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture. In 2013, both Shim and Sutcliffe were presented with the Order of Canada for “designing sophisticated structures that represent the best of Canadian design to the world.” Brigitte Shim is also a full professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto where she has taught since 1988.
